Bressingham Nursery 2022
Why You Should Know More About
THE BRESSINGHAM GARDENS NURSERY
The Bressingham Garden Nursery is run by Jason Bloom and helpers, and is now a small nursery based close to The Bressingham Gardens. Although the nursery does still supply certain garden centres including the RHS, we feel that it is more important that we have a direct line to gardeners and would-be gardeners. Quality, variety and service were the three main principles Alan Bloom outlined when he began his nursery back in 1926, and we have tried to adhere to those principles up until and including today.
Quality
There’s no denying that the perennials and grasses grown in 2 litre pots here at Bressingham are of a quality and value to money second to none.
Variety
Although the 500 or so items listed on our online shop shows good range, this changes seasonally throughout the year according to the stock available, which may include several hundred more varieties as they come into season. A great many of the varieties come from The Bressingham Gardens and are only available from Bressingham. New plants are constantly being introduced, bred by Jaime Blake, curator of the Dell Garden, and Adrian Bloom owner of the Foggy Bottom Garden.
Service
Not to detail all the stages here, but all plants are inspected and generally selected by Jason. If a plant is not up to standard, it will not be sent. You can ensure that, even at busy times, plants will be despatched well within two weeks on receipt of order. Each plant is individually packed.

- Looking across the nursery, you can hardly miss the bronze/purple foliage of Actaea simplex 'James Compton'. This, like many perennials did get damaged a bit by the intense heat and the need to water, but these are strong plants although they will be cut back before sending out. 'James Compton' is certainly in our view, perhaps the most striking of the purple-leaved Actaeas.
- The name 'Molly Howick' won't mean much to anyone unless you already have this plant in your garden. This Agapanthus is robust, free flowering and one of the earliest to come into bloom. Here you can see some of the quality plants on the nursery.
- Agapanthus 'Tinkerbell' is one of the most brightly variegated selections of Agapanthus and makes a really good foliage plant. It is less floriferous than the other variegated form we offer Agapanthus 'Silver Moon' which flowers prefusely once established, shown here in the Dell Garden.
- And now for something new, Jaime Blake has been breeding Kniphofias, Crocosmias and Agapanthus for a few years now, and has named several. This variety was named after his father Maurice Blake. It's compact and free flowering.
- Here you see the quality of the plants, in this case, what we consider to be one of the best daylily introductions called Hemerocallis 'Flasher'. It has been in Foggy Bottom for the last 20 years and flowers freely every year, as it has in pots. Not many people know this, but we think Bressingham Gardens Nursery is the only place in the country where 'Flasher' can be obtained.
- Cortaderia selloana Pumila. Our form has dark green leaves and once established silvery plumes (or inflorescences) which show up brilliantly against the sky or a darker background from late summer to spring. Half shade or sun where it can be seen (ideally) from a house or home window. For more detail please see our video.Foliage height 90-120 cm. (cut back to 60cm in spring), plumes 150-180cm.
- Carex tenuiculmis. Deeper colour than the similar Carex comans Bronze , its dark glossy foliage a great contrast to other plants. Full sun for best colour where not too dry. height 45 cm x width 60-75cm.
